Displaying love for the country
By Chuah Bee Kim - NST 05, September, 2007
Monica John has never made a big deal of Merdeka in the past, but since this was the nation's 50th birthday, the 33-year-old felt compelled to some thing.
Wanting to not just spread Merdeka cheer by handling out flags, John got dressed up as Jalur Gemilang and passed out red wristband etched with the words Malaysia Tanah Airku.
"There are Unity Bands and red symbolises that deep down we are all the same colour." said John, who runs a drama school in Seremban/.
She also got two of her friends together to help her distribute the bands to shoppers at City Square shopping complex. John said the 150 pieces of the band were given out in less than halp an hour.
John, of Taman Pulai Indah, said she learnt about the bands from the Mix FM radio station, which is promoting them over the radio, on television and on its webpage.
She got the bands from Astro, who runs Mix FM, which gave the items for free.
"I don't normally do anything for Merdeka Day as I usually have my hands full taking care of my two boys, when I am noot over at the drama school.
"But this year, I feel compelled because this is the 50th year. We have had 50 years of peace and unity and that is a reason to celebrate," she said.
John also roped in her best friends, Fairuz Abdul Samad, 33, and Tan Bee Lian, 35, to help her to distribute the items, while her maid looked after her two boys. [ Back ] |
